A small camera makes you less noticeable. You are just another tourist. Statements like these are absolutely true, but they also make street photography seem sneaky and underhand. I'm not into that.
A small camera is incredibly handy because it's small to begin with. The Ricoh fits in your trouser pocket. The Fujifilm X100 series simply weighs less than your full-frame Canon. You can easily spend hours doing street photography, and then you don't want to lug kilos around. That's all there is to it.
I also have tips on photographing secretly or candidly, but 'because it doesn't stand out' is a really bad one.
I recently heard from someone, and can completely imagine this, that people nowadays are more focused on mobile phones than on cameras. Whatever you capture with your phone is, of course, on the rubbish tip we call social media within three seconds. Now that's threatening!
