It can look good to give your background a different colour, such as blue. This often works well in combination with white or yellowish light.
You can of course attach a blue colour filter to a flash and use it to light the background. However, that is not always very practical. If your background is very large, it may be impossible to light it completely with flashes.
A fun alternative is to attach an orange (CTO) colour filter to your main light instead. In other words, the flash you use to light your subject. By correcting for the yellow light using the white balance in your camera, or afterwards in editing, the background will automatically take on a blue colour.
