Last night saw the first episode of Het Perfecte Plaatje on television. The brand-new batch of Dutch celebrities took on two assignments. They made 'opposites portraits' and splash photos.

Splash photo

The second assignment was to make a splash photo. Bente reacted very negatively to this assignment, by the way, but it was not entirely clear to me why. I think she thought it would be very difficult, but in the end it really was not too bad.

The participants were all allowed to choose an object before they knew what the assignment would be.

With a splash photo, the idea is to capture the splashing liquid while throwing something into it. The object thrown into the liquid also had to be visible in the photo.

Linda won this round with her upside-down photo of marbles being thrown into the water. She had creatively thought beforehand of turning the photo upside down for the unusual effect.

For the splash photos, the Dutch celebrities used the Canon EOS 90D digital SLR with either the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro or the 24-70mm f/2.8L.

The 100mm Macro is of course ideal for capturing details clearly. This lens is also incredibly sharp, by the way. I have one myself, and it is also excellent for portraits.

Linda used the 24-70mm for her winning photo, by the way. The advantage is of course that you can fit a little more into the photo more easily.

I am also very enthusiastic about the 24-70mm f/2.8. This is the lens I use for most of my photos. A lovely fast and versatile lens.

Reportage flashguns were used to freeze the image. That works very well for this type of photography, because the light pulse from such a flashgun is extremely short. This freezes all movement in the photo.

The flashguns were triggered wirelessly via triggers from the participants' cameras. This makes it easy to use several flashguns from multiple angles.

Pim Hendriksen was the guest judge for this shoot and gave the candidates some extra tips.

Just as in previous years, nobody was sent home during this first week. From next week onwards, one candidate will have to leave the programme each week.
