Canon has announced a new lens: the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM. This fast lens is a great alternative to the more expensive and heavier L version. It will be available from October 2024.

The RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is a compact and lightweight lens. It weighs just 490 grams and is less than 10 centimetres long. This makes it a very suitable all-round lens. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 also makes it fast.
The lens has built-in image stabilisation of 5.5 stops, which combined with the large maximum aperture makes it suitable for taking photos in dark conditions. It is also weather-sealed.
The RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM will be available in shops from October 2024 at a recommended retail price of 1,319.99 euros.

I still find the RF lenses rather pricey. Apparently that is due to price increases in the chip market, but also labor costs and such. I recently bought the RF f4.5-6.3 15-30mm IS STM, but that one is already a hefty €659 as well. And this RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM will probably also be a bridge too far for many a hobby photographer. That is why I am sticking with the 5D Mark IV with the f2.8 16-35mm L and the f4 24-105mm L, which cost only a fraction of RF lenses or R cameras . The latter are pricey too . I mainly use the R and RF lenses on vacation.

By the way I bought everything second-hand , except for the RF 15-30mm .
