Canon has announced two popular RF lenses, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM. These are new lenses for Canon R system cameras.
Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
Perhaps the more interesting of the two. At least, at a price of 240 euros, this is a very affordable RF lens. I have always been a fan of the EF 50mm f/1.8 for Canon's DSLRs.
The 50mm is affordable (the old one even more so than this one) and delivers very good quality. This makes it a very suitable lens for learning about the value of fast prime lenses.
If you bought an R camera with a kit lens, this also seems to me to be an excellent starter lens for beginner photographers.

At 160 grams, the 50mm is nice and light. It is 41mm long, so it is nice and compact too. It is exactly the sort of lens you can easily slip into your bag when you head out.
Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM
The new 70-200mm is nice too. This is also an extremely popular lens for DSLRs. It is considerably cheaper than the 70-200mm f/2.8 version.
The difference is worthwhile in the RF range too. The f/4 is around 1,000 euros cheaper than the f/2.8. So you can save a lot by giving up one stop of light.

As you can see, the length of the lens changes when you zoom. It weighs just 695 grams. However, there is no option to add a teleconverter, and no tripod mount is provided.
The built-in image stabilisation can provide up to 5 stops of benefit. Combined with the in-body image stabilisation of the latest Canon R cameras, this is even 7.5 stops.
The minimum focusing distance of the 70-200mm f/4 is 60 centimetres.
Price and availability
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM should be in shops in December and will cost 240 euros. The RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM costs 1,830 euros. This lens should also be available in December.
