Nikon is expanding its Z series of mirrorless cameras with a new model. The Z series was reserved for full-frame users for a long time. As well as high-quality photos, you can easily shoot 4K video with plenty of detail, depth and colour.

The mirrorless Nikon Z 50 has an APS-C 20.9-megapixel DX sensor and offers many optical benefits in a sturdy and compact DX camera body. Its appearance is very similar to that of the Z7 and Z6 models with full-frame sensors, but the new model is slightly smaller and has a smaller sensor.

The sensor has 209 autofocus points. They cover around 90 per cent of the image area horizontally and vertically. The chip has a sensitivity of 100 to 51,200 ISO and a 4K movie function at up to 30fps. In Full HD, the movie speed goes up to 120fps.

Features carried over from the highly acclaimed Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 include the large Nikon Z mount, a deep grip, the bright, broad hybrid AF system (autofocus), a sharp electronic viewfinder and a tilting touchscreen. The viewfinder is electronic and has a 2.36-million-dot OLED panel, giving it a lower resolution than the top models.

There is a tilting touchscreen on the back, and the camera has a built-in pop-up flash. It also has a new battery, which should be good for taking 320 photos via the LCD or 280 photos with the electronic viewfinder.

The deep grip that is characteristic of Nikon system cameras makes them comfortable to hold. Eye-detection AF makes the Z 50 an excellent camera for portraits, while continuous shooting at up to 11fps (with AF/AE) lets you capture movement effortlessly.

NIKKOR Z DX lenses

Combined with the first two NIKKOR Z DX lenses (the NIKKOR Z CX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR and the NIKKOR X DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR), you immediately have a range from wide-angle to telephoto and excellent image quality.

The Z 50 is fully compatible with Nikon's FTZ mount adapter, which makes it possible to use NIKKOR D-SLR lenses with an F mount on this camera. Both DX lenses with a Z mount have been optimised for the large Nikon Z mount, which captures a great deal of light.

These zoom lenses have fast, quiet and stable focusing, making them just as suitable for video as they are for photos. The very compact NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is a pancake zoom lens that can capture both wide-angle shots and portraits beautifully.

The NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is a compact telephoto zoom lens. With this lens, you can capture beautiful portraits as well as action steadily and accurately.
