28mm is a popular focal length among street photographers. It lets you capture your subject and surroundings, move closer, and create great wider views too. It is more manageable for the mobile street photographer than, for example, a 24mm lens.
Especially if you are more into hunting for a good shot, the 28mm is the lens of choice. If you combine this lens with fast autofocus, you can take photos while walking and there is a good chance you will consistently capture your subject in the way you want.
With a 50mm lens, you have to pay much more attention to composition: there is simply far less in your photo.
Although this focal length is easy and forgiving, I do get the impression that 35mm is increasingly becoming the norm. For the beginner street photographer, however, it cannot hurt to spend a few hours with the 28mm before narrowing your view.
