Nikon has announced a new full-frame mirrorless camera in its Z series today: the Nikon Z5. The new camera has a 24-megapixel sensor and is the new entry-level model in the Nikon Z system.

Nikon Z5

The Nikon Z5 is a fairly mature camera with built-in image stabilisation on the sensor and the autofocus system from Nikon's more expensive Z6.

Nikon Z5 specifications

- 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor
- 4.5 photos per second
- Image stabilisation on the sensor (5 stops)
- ISO sensitivity: 100 - 51,200 ISO (expandable to 50 - 102,400)
- 3.2-inch display (tilting)
- 2 SD(XC) card slots
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- 4K video (30p)
- Weight: 675 grams

Price and availability

The Nikon Z5 + NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 kit will be available from 27 August 2020. The recommended retail price for the kit is 1,899 euros.

The lens, the kit lens sold with the Nikon Z5, is also new. The lens has the range of a standard zoom. I do not expect outstanding performance from this lens straight away, but it is an affordable way to start with the Z system.

Focusing is possible from 35 centimetres and it accepts 52mm filters.

A bit of a D750 in a mirrorless package if you ask me. But if you're starting out with full-frame mirrorless, a good choice. I just don't understand lenses like this. Before they really perform well, you're at f8, and you can't do much with depth of field then. So choose another lens to go with it.

@Frits: indeed I don't understand either. t Isn't a crappy little camera and then such a lens. The sharpness will be quite alright from "wide-open" aperture, but even then. Doesn't fit such a fairly pricey body. Range is lousy too, its DSLR relatives have 24-80 3.5-5.6, that's just a few more possibilities.

Z5 has built-in stabilization, and also 2 SD card slots very nice this one will still be considered to use alongside my D850, comfort due to stabilization & weight (no VR lenses needed)

I have a D750, among others, and a lot of Tamron 2.8 glass (heavy, that much is true), and most of it has 5 stops of VR built in. Other than an EVW, I can find little reason to switch. That doesn't change the fact that all of Nikon's Z cameras are excellent cameras, of course, and if I were starting out, I would also go for mirrorless cameras.
