Sony recently held a press conference to announce its latest lens. We didn't see any photos of the lens then, but during SWPA 2025, a select number of photographers were allowed to take a few photos with it. I was one of them.
Of course, this lens had already appeared on the rumour websites, but until it is official, its appearance remains uncertain. During SWPA, I was given the opportunity, together with a select group, to photograph with it.
The lens has now been officially launched. I no longer have to keep quiet about it. The Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is a substantial lens with a useful range and one stop more light transmission. Despite this, the lens isn't too heavy, thanks to the latest technology.
The lens is of course perfect for wedding and portrait photographers. Sony says that the image quality matches that of a prime lens. This means you no longer have to carry a 50mm, an 85mm, a 100mm and a 135mm lens. They're all available.
The FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is about the same size as an FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM lens, and weighs almost the same. That's quite an achievement, given the need for more glass to achieve f/2. Unfortunately, there is no image stabilisation, so you have to rely on the camera's IBIS.
The zoom is internal, so the lens doesn't get longer when zooming. There is an aperture ring, with the option to turn off the clicks and lock it in the A position if you prefer to control the aperture via the camera.
I've already used the lens for a wedding shoot, and the zoom range is ideal for that. It offers a lot of flexibility and avoids the need to change prime lenses. An extensive review of this excellent lens will follow soon.
The lens will be available from June 2025 at a recommended retail price of 4,400 euros. That's a substantial amount, but you no longer need a 50mm, 85mm and 135mm. Perhaps I'm being optimistic, but in the end it may not make much difference to your expenditure if you're in the market for this lens.

Prachtig stukje techniek, maar ik houd het nog lekker bij m'n Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 waarvan de resultaten er nog steeds mogen zijn! Hoewel ook niet goedkoop, nog altijd een flink stuk goedkoper dan deze. Maar wel leuk om over de 'dromen'. Wie weet ooit...
