Wednesday was the second episode of Het Perfecte Plaatje. This time, the Dutch celebrities took on street photography and had to make a self-portrait in the style of Roman times. This week, someone really had to leave the programme.

Beauty on the Street

The first assignment was photographing beauty on the street. The participants had an hour and fifteen minutes to make a street photo that showed beauty. 'Beauty' was a fairly broad concept here.

Guest judge for this shoot was street photographer Merel Schoneveld, and the participants were given a Canon EOS R6 fitted with a 35mm f/1.8 lens.

A 35mm is of course perfect for street photography. The R6 is also a quiet camera, although not necessarily the least conspicuous one. Not that being inconspicuous is really possible when a cameraman is looking over your shoulder.

The idea was that the photos should not be posed, but of course a posed shot was made now and then.

The winning photo came from Juvat. His photo of a homeless man had the greatest appeal to the jury. The funny thing was that the photo won because of the cargo bike riding through the frame, especially the child looking into the camera.

The scores were not particularly high for this assignment. I think it is quite difficult to make a really good street photo in such a short time and without much experience in this genre.

Roman-era selfie

For the second assignment, the participants travelled to the Heilig Land Stichting on the outskirts of Nijmegen. Here, they had to make a self-portrait in this museum park in the style of Roman times.

The Dutch celebrities were each given an object that had to appear in the photo. Photographer Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk was the guest judge and helped the candidates get started. In my view, quite a few beautiful photos were made during this session. That was also reflected in the jury's scores.

The candidates could use the R6 again for this shoot, this time fitted with a 24-105mm f/4 lens. That is of course a great portrait lens for a full-frame camera.

The winning photo was made by Frits. He also achieved the best overall score of this episode.

It did turn out to be a great photo. One slight drawback may be the candlestick in the background, which looks a bit like a large cigar coming out of his mouth.

With a final score just one tenth lower than Georgina's, Donnie was the first to leave the programme.

Next week

Next week, the remaining candidates will photograph the lifeboat brigade in action, and it will be time for the traditional nude shoot again.
