The solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 is just around the corner. Many photographers are travelling to Iceland or Spain to see, experience and photograph totality. I will be doing the same. Are you ready for the solar eclipse? A total solar eclipse must be quite an experience. I have never experienced one, and now I have the chance to go and see, experience and photograph one in Spain. Good preparation is important.
Eclipse glasses are important. Of course, you want to protect your eyes properly from the dazzling sunlight. But your camera also needs protection from the bright sunlight. There are various filters available, such as the Haida One Million X Edition filter, which blocks no less than a million times the light. Or a Baader solar filter, which is also used by astrophotographers.
To see totality, you need to go to Spain or Iceland. I chose Spain, because you can easily drive there. In the Netherlands, about 90% of the Sun will be obscured. That is spectacular too.
I have made a plan using Photopills. But that may still change on location. The weather also plays an important role, of course. A cloudy sky is not ideal. Ik heb de zonsverduistering van 11 augustus 1999 meegemaakt. Toen alleen vanaf het dak van het kantoor waar ik toen werkte, zelfs nog zonder eclipsbrilletje wat niet te doen was natuurlijk.
